Greeks Retain Power

Greek ship owners control 46.72% of the EU fleet based on dwt tonnage, a token of the size of the country’s maritime industry, despite the challenging conditions in global shipping. As such, Greece has remained the No1 maritime nation globally, controlling a total of 3,669 vessels (over 1,000 GT), which make up for the 16.16% of the global fleet, in terms of deadweight tonnage. This according Mr. Theodoros Veniamis, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), the vast majority of the fleet is been managed by companies based in Greece. As a result, shipping is responsible for about 7% of the country’s GDP.
